Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bachchan: Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are one of the most loved couples of Bollywood. The couple got married on June 3, 1973 in an intimate function in Mumbai. However, not many would know that Amitabh’s father and famous Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan made some shocking revelations about his son’s marriage in his biography, ‘In the Afternoon of Time: An Autobiography by Harivansh Rai Bachchan’.
Five baraatis attended Amitabh-Jaya’s wedding
According to a Rediff report, Harivansh Rai Bachchan had revealed in his book that Amitabh and Jaya’s wedding was an intimate function and hence only a few guests were present at the ceremony. He had revealed that the wedding took place at the house of a friend of the couple on the top floor of the Skylark building in Malabar Hills. He said that the baraatis consisted of only five people, including himself and political leader Sanjay Gandhi. He said that Jaya’s family did not seem excited about the wedding.
Jaya’s family was not happy with the marriage!
He wrote in the book, “Jaya’s parents wanted the wedding to be in the Bengali way, to which we had no objection. The first stage was Var-Pooja, the honouring of the groom, in which Jaya’s father Mangal (Amitabh) had to bring a gift to the house and hold a small ceremony. After this I did the same for the bride at the beach house. I saw something unexpected at the beach house. Apart from Jaya, no one in the family showed even the slightest sign of happiness.”
Even the neighbors did not know about Amitabh-Jaya’s marriage
He mentioned in the book that even Amitabh’s haldi ceremony was done quietly. He wrote that even the neighbors did not know about Amitabh’s marriage. He wrote, “When the neighbors asked what the decoration of light bulbs meant, we lied that Amitabh would be shooting a film here the next night.”
After Jaya’s marriage, her father had said that the family was ruined
Harivansh Rai Bachchan has mentioned in the book that the baraat was welcomed ‘without any fanfare’. When they arrived at the mandap, they saw Jaya Bachchan, then known as Jaya Bhaduri, decked up as a bride. Amitabh’s father saw the ‘shyness’ on her face, and he could tell that she was actually shy and not acting. After the function was over, the poet wrote that ‘five baraatis had their food and went home’. Both families stayed behind to complete the rest of the function. “Before we left, I hugged my new daughter-in-law’s father and congratulated him on getting a son-in-law like Amit, expecting him to say the same about Jaya. But he said, ‘My family is completely ruined.’
Amitabh and Jaya have completed 51 years of marriage
Let us tell you that Amitabh and Jaya have been married for 51 years. The couple has two children, Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Shweta is married to Nikhil Nanda and they have two children, son Agastya Nanda and daughter Navya Naveli Nanda, while Abhishek is married to Aishwarya Rai. They have a daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan.
